The Line Text (Yao Ci) for the Six in the Fifth Place (六五) of the Kun hexagram is just four characters: 「黄裳，元吉。」

Wearing a yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune.

You might be thinking, that’s too simple, right? Just four characters, and it’s “supreme good fortune”?

Yes. It’s that simple. But the simpler something seems, the more depth it usually holds.

Think about it: why is it a “yellow lower garment” and not a “yellow robe”? Why a lower garment and not an upper one?

Because Kun is a Yin hexagram, a soft hexagram, the hexagram of “generous virtue that carries all things.” Its good fortune isn’t the flashy, boastful, in-your-face kind. It’s gentle, steady, low-key, and unassuming.

What color is yellow? It’s the color of the earth, the central color, the correct color. It’s not loud, but it’s enduring and pleasing to the eye.

What is a lower garment? It’s clothing for the lower body, a position of humility. Worn below, it never steals the spotlight.

You wear a yellow lower garment: you hold a high position but don’t claim credit for achievements, you have esteemed status but stay humble, you have strength but don’t show it off. That is the most perfect state of the Kun hexagram, which is why it’s called “元吉 (Supreme Good Fortune)” — great luck that is solid from the very root.

The Xiang Commentary (Images) says: 「黄裳元吉，文在中也。」

What does that mean? True good fortune is when your inner qualities are full to the brim, and light radiates out from within you. It’s not a random stroke of luck that falls out of the sky and conks you on the head.

Many people misunderstand good luck: they think it’s winning the lottery, meeting a powerful benefactor, or a chance opportunity dropping out of nowhere. That’s not it. True good luck is when your whole state of being is aligned — you’re doing the right things, you have the right mindset, you’re moving at the right pace, and then everything around you starts to go smoothly.

It doesn’t land on you out of the blue; you cultivate it.

People in a Lucky Streak All Have These Feelings

So how do you tell if you’re in a lucky streak? Let me share a few signs — you can check them against your own life.

First, things go unusually smoothly.

That doesn’t mean you never run into difficulties. It means when you do hit a snag, there’s always someone to help you, always a way to fix it. You’re looking for something, and it somehow pops up right in front of you. You want to meet someone, and a friend introduces you out of the blue.

You can’t quite put your finger on why — things just flow.

Second, you’re in a good mood, and everything seems pleasant.

Things that used to make you angry now roll off your back with a laugh. People you used to find annoying now don’t seem so bad. It’s not the world that’s changed — it’s you.

When your heart is open and bright, everything you look at feels bright too.

Third, your physical state is great.

You wake up in the morning feeling light and energized all day, and you sleep soundly at night. Everything tastes good, and you have energy for whatever you do.

Your body is the most honest indicator. It knows before you do whether your state is good or not.

Fourth, everyone around you seems to be helping you.

You’re not deliberately sucking up to anyone — people just naturally want to help you. Your boss wants to give you opportunities, your colleagues want to work with you, your friends want to connect you with resources.

That’s really not the case.

The “Supreme Good Fortune” of the Six in the Fifth Place of Kun doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s built step by step, starting from the Six at the Beginning (初六): “Treading on frost, solid ice is on the way.”

At the Six at the Beginning stage, you first notice a hint of chill, and you start being careful and cautious.

At the Six in the Second Place stage, you find your own rhythm and move forward steadily.

At the Six in the Third Place stage, you learn to rein in your edge, hold your virtues close, and accumulate quietly.

At the Six in the Fourth Place stage, you learn to restrain yourself, keep your counsel, and stay centered without stirring up trouble.

Only after walking through these first four steps do you reach the “Yellow Lower Garment, Supreme Good Fortune” of the Six in the Fifth Place.

Without the accumulation that comes before, there’s no good luck after.

I once had a reader who asked me every single day when his luck would turn around. I said, first tell me what you’ve been up to lately.

He said he slacks off at work, plays video games after work, and stays home all weekend.

I said, then your luck won’t turn. It’s not that I won’t give you a method — it’s that you’re not moving. Even if luck came looking for you, it wouldn’t find you.

Luck only seeks out people who are already on the move. If you’re lying around at home, even if it wants to knock on your door, you have to get up and answer it.

Times change, and methods get simpler and simpler. When you get right down to it, improving your luck boils down to one sentence: live well first, and luck will come naturally.

Some people might say, I get it — I’m in that “Yellow Lower Garment, Supreme Good Fortune” state right now. So what should I do? Should I grab every chance and go all out?

Don’t rush.

The advice the Six in the Fifth Place of Kun gives you is actually not to push higher — it’s to stay low-key and keep building.

Why? Because if you go one step higher from the Six in the Fifth Place of Kun, you reach the Six at the Top (上六). What’s that? “Dragons fight in the wild, their blood is dark and yellow.” When Yin reaches its extreme, change follows; things turn back when they reach their peak.

You’re in a lucky streak right now, but if you get cocky, get swollen-headed, and forget who you are, that good luck will run out fast.

I’ve seen way too many examples of this. Someone has a few good years, starts thinking they can do anything, makes reckless investments, expands too fast, hangs out with the wrong people. Then one bad fall wipes out everything they built over those years in an instant.

So when you’re in a lucky streak, the most important thing to do isn’t to splurge — it’s to reinforce your foundation.

What does that mean? Three things.

First, use the momentum to solidify your base. Things are going smoothly for you right now: you have more resources, more opportunities, a wider network. Hurry up and build the systems you need to build, fix the gaps you need to fix. Don’t wait until your luck runs out to realize you have no foundation to stand on.

Second, help more people. When you’re in a high position, reach down and give a hand to people below you. This isn’t charity — it’s paving roads for yourself. When you come down from that high place one day, the people you helped will be the ones there to catch you.

Third, stay clear-headed. Don’t think everything you have is all because you’re so amazing. What the times give you, the times can take back at any moment. The smoother things go, the more you need to ask yourself: is this my skill, or just good luck?

Only when you figure that out can you go further.

If you’re at the Six at the Beginning, don’t rush — take it slow, the start is always hard.

If you’re at the Six in the Third Place, don’t get cocky — rein in your edge and keep building.

If you’re at the Six in the Fifth Place, don’t mess around — stay steady, don’t squander your good luck.

If you’re at the Six at the Top, don’t be afraid — things turn back when they reach their peak, and a new start is just around the corner.

Good luck isn’t a result — it’s a state. When your state is right, it comes. When your state is off, it leaves.

You don’t have to beg for it everywhere or ask everyone about it. Every morning when you wake up, put a hand on your chest and ask: how’s my state today? Am I doing the right things today? Am I in a good mood today?

The answer is right there.
