☾ Yin: The beginning is fraught with difficulties, the direction is unclear, and resources are scarce. Blind expansion will lead to collapse midway; impulsive and reckless advancement will end in failure halfway. An unstable foundation will cause the entire edifice to crumble in an instant.
Hexagram 5: Xu (Water Heaven Xu)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Qian (Heaven)
☀ Yang: Clouds rise above the heavens, waiting for the right time to bring rain. Wait with integrity, accumulate strength, and when the time is ripe, success will naturally follow. Live in peace and contentment, enrich yourself, wait patiently for good news, and everything will fall into place when conditions are right.
☾ Yin: Impulsive advancement will lead to dangerous situations; empty waiting without preparation will waste time. Acting out of desperation or panic will only invite disaster. Waiting without preparation will ultimately cause you to miss all favorable opportunities.
Hexagram 8: Bi (Water Earth Bi)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Kun (Earth)
☀ Yang: Choose virtuous people as friends and treat them with sincerity. The value of connections lies in quality, not quantity. Stay close to the capable and virtuous, keep away from petty people, support each other, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. Only with integrity and unity can relationships last long.
☾ Yin: Forming cliques for personal gain or attaching oneself to dishonest people will eventually lead to implication. Lack of independence will only make you be used by others; blind socializing drains energy, and making bad friends will drag you down instead.
Hexagram 29: Kan (Kan as Water)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Kan (Water)
☀ Yang: Layer upon layer of obstacles, the image of repeated Kan (danger). Face dangers with integrity and wisdom; though the flow of water is perilous, it never ceases. With perseverance and resolve, and by practicing ways to cope with difficulties, you will eventually break through the predicament.
☾ Yin: Cowering in fear will leave you trapped in danger forever. Taking chances with luck or acting recklessly will only make you sink deeper. One danger is not yet overcome when another arises; you will be caught in a dilemma with no way out.
Hexagram 39: Jian (Water Mountain Jian)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Gen (Mountain)
☀ Yang: There is danger ahead and mountains behind, leaving you in a dilemma. When encountering difficulties, do not complain; instead, reflect on yourself. Pause to reflect and correct your ways, and seek help from virtuous people. Act according to the level of danger, and you will eventually get through the hard times.
☾ Yin: Forcing your way forward recklessly will lead you into a deeper predicament. Blaming everyone and everything but yourself will make you miss the chance to save yourself. Refusing to retreat in the face of difficulties and not knowing how to take a detour will only leave you battered and at a loss what to do.
Hexagram 48: Jing (Water Wind Jing)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Xun (Wind/Wood)
☀ Yang: Wood enters the water and brings it up, the well nourishes endlessly. Like well water silently nourishing all things, hold fast to your original heart. Cultivate your character and virtue, benefit others, and if you do not change your resolve, you will ultimately reap the rewards.
☾ Yin: A well with muddy water is used by no one; a person who does not cultivate themselves will be abandoned by others. Sticking to old ways without renewal will lead to elimination. When well water runs dry, it loses its value; if you do not progress, you will fall behind.
Hexagram 60: Jie (Water Lake Jie)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Dui (Lake)
☀ Yang: There is water above the lake, indicating moderation and proper restraint. Just as rivers have embankments, handle affairs with a proper sense of proportion and stop when appropriate. Only those with self-discipline can attain freedom; knowing when to stop keeps you from danger, and moderation ensures long-lasting success.
☾ Yin: Excessive restraint will become unbearable and cannot be sustained. Overcorrecting will produce the opposite effect. Bitter, extreme restraint cannot be maintained as a constant norm; being overly harsh will make everyone feel insecure, and the system will become rigid.
Hexagram 63: Jiji (Water Fire Jiji / After Completion)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Kan (Water), Lower Li (Fire)
☀ Yang: Water and fire interact with each other, marking the completion of a great achievement. Yin and yang each occupy their proper positions, and all matters are accomplished. After success, one should be vigilant in times of peace and maintain the achievements without slacking off. Seeing hidden dangers amid perfection will ensure long-term peace and stability.
☾ Yin: Slacking off after success will waste all previous efforts. Failing to retire at the right time after achieving merit will lead to decline at the peak of prosperity. If you do not guard your achievements carefully after Jiji (completion), all the fruits of your labor will be washed away.
