Hexagram 17: Sui (Following / Ze Lei Sui)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Zhen (Thunder)
☀ Yang Aspect: Thunder within the lake—adapt to circumstances. Let go of stubbornness, follow the right trend and the right people. Be flexible in adapting to the environment, follow what is good, act in accordance with the times; those who go with the flow prosper.
☾ Yin Aspect: Blind following leads to loss of self-direction; drifting with the tide will eventually lead to being lost. Following without distinguishing good from evil, being led astray by petty people will sink one into the mire. Those without their own judgment can hardly achieve great things.
Hexagram 28: Da Guo (Great Exceeding / Ze Feng Da Guo)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Xun (Wind)
☀ Yang Aspect: The lake submerges wood—yang energy is overly abundant; extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Though the ridgepole bears heavy weight, standing firm without fear and daring to take responsibility can achieve great merits; act extraordinarily in extraordinary times.
☾ Yin Aspect: Excessive load will break the ridgepole. Overabundant yang without softness harms both body and mind; arbitrary action leaves one without support. Going too far is as bad as not going far enough; exhaustion leads to collapse.
Hexagram 31: Xian (Mutual Influence / Ze Shan Xian)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Gen (Mountain)
☀ Yang Aspect: Mountain and lake exchange qi—yin and yang interact. Treat others with sincere and unfeigned heart; spontaneous resonance brings true affection. Harmonious feelings, harmonious interpersonal relationships; only with an open mind can one win people's hearts.
☾ Yin Aspect: Calculation in mind distorts mutual influence; treating others with scheming eventually loses people's trust. False affection cannot win true feelings; utilitarian friendships hardly last. Resonance without sincerity remains superficial.
Hexagram 43: Guai (Resoluteness / Ze Tian Guai)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Qian (Heaven)
☀ Yang Aspect: Lake rising above heaven—five yang lines resolve one yin line. Resolutely eliminate the remaining forces of petty people, promote good and eradicate evil with the momentum of justice. Be resolute but not violent; publicly denounce rather than resort to force, acting with uprightness and openness.
☾ Yin Aspect: Hesitation breeds future troubles. Bullying the weak or countering violence with violence invites disaster instead. Resoluteness without uprightness loses moral ground; being headstrong leaves one isolated and helpless.
Hexagram 45: Cui (Gathering / Ze Di Cui)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Kun (Earth)
☀ Yang Aspect: Lake above the earth—the image of gathering. Gather people's hearts with sincerity and humility; convergence of talents brings prosperity to the cause. Gather with uprightness, discern and select the right people, then great things can be achieved.
☾ Yin Aspect: Improper gathering leads to clique formation and self-seeking, with troubles arising from within. Though people gather, divergent directions cause severe internal friction. Mixing the good and the bad without screening leaves endless hidden dangers.
Hexagram 47: Kun (Oppression / Ze Shui Kun)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Kan (Water)
☀ Yang Aspect: The lake has no water—a dead end in adversity. Be in adverse circumstances but keep an optimistic heart, stick to the right path and uphold virtue. Adversity is an opportunity to temper the will; those who persevere will see a way out.
☾ Yin Aspect: Losing ambition in困境 and giving up on oneself will never lead to a way out. Refusing to change in困境 means waiting for death. Losing integrity in poverty and destitution leads to the downfall of both character and situation.
Hexagram 49: Ge (Revolution / Ze Huo Ge)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Li (Fire)
☀ Yang Aspect: Fire within the lake—transformation and renewal. When the time is ripe, carry out bold reforms, conform to the will of heaven and the people, and discard the old to bring forth the new. Reforms that accord with the people's will bring great fortune; the momentum of weeding out the old is unstoppable.
☾ Yin Aspect: Acting too hastily before the time for reform is ripe yields half the result with twice the effort. Frequent changes in orders unsettle people's hearts; changing for the sake of change backfires. Improper revolution leads to chaos under heaven.
Hexagram 58: Dui (Joy / Dui Wei Ze)
Hexagram Structure: Upper Dui (Lake), Lower Dui (Lake)
☀ Yang Aspect: Two lakes adjoining each other—joy and harmony. Treat others with sincerity and kindness, infect others with joy. Create a harmonious atmosphere; when people are in harmony, things succeed. Mutual joy, mutual tolerance, and mutual progress.
☾ Yin Aspect: Pleasing others with hypocrisy backfires. Flattery leads to loss of dignity. Joy without uprightness and blind flattery reduce one to a petty person. Apparent joy hides ulterior motives.
