Understand the eight hexagrams of the Gen (Mountain) Palace ☶ in one sentence
Hexagram 4: *Meng* (Mountain over Water, *Meng*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Kan* (Water)
☀ Yang Aspect: *Meng* nurtures uprightness, signifying enlightenment and the pursuit of knowledge. Be humble and eager to learn, and you will dispel the fog to see the light of day. Sincere seeking of guidance will surely yield rewards; with a wise teacher to point out the way, your cognition will improve and your future will gradually brighten.
☾ Yin Aspect: Being complacent and closed off makes one foolish and hard to transform; being fond of lecturing others incurs dislike. Refusing to progress leaves one trapped in ignorance; rejecting enlightenment leads to long-term confusion, and self-righteousness will ultimately ruin great undertakings.
Hexagram 18: *Gu* (Mountain over Wind, *Gu*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Xun* (Wind)
☀ Yang Aspect: Wind beneath the mountain signifies accumulated ills coming to a head — it is precisely the time to discard the old and usher in the new. Dare to rectify disorders, face problems courageously, balance boldness with patience, and proceed step by step to turn decay into wonder.
☾ Yin Aspect: Following old routines and muddling along will let corruption deepen until it is beyond repair. Hiding from long-standing problems like a patient讳疾忌医 (afraid to seek treatment for fear of diagnosis) will only make matters worse, until the burden becomes too heavy to reverse.
Hexagram 22: *Bi* (Mountain over Fire, *Bi*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Li* (Fire)
☀ Yang Aspect: Fire beneath the mountain signifies splendid refinement and grace. Appropriate adornment and attention to etiquette and reputation can boost one’s fortune. Yet one must take simplicity as the foundation and strength as the root; a balance of refinement and substance makes a true gentleman.
☾ Yin Aspect: A gorgeous exterior without substantial support is ultimately a pillow embroidered with flowers — beautiful but useless. Putting the cart before the horse, valuing appearance over essence, leads to superficiality; excessive ornamentation反而 conceals the truth, leaving only a false facade.
Hexagram 23: *Bo* (Mountain over Earth, *Bo*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Kun* (Earth)
☀ Yang Aspect: The mountain is peeling away, with yin rising and yang declining, signifying a downward turn in fortune. It is advisable to retreat and preserve strength, hold back instead of expanding. Recognize the trend, prioritize cutting losses — as long as the green hills remain, there will be no shortage of firewood.
☾ Yin Aspect: Forcing on without retreating and expanding against the trend will accelerate defeat. The foundation is eroded, and the great building is about to collapse. When petty people gain power and the way of the gentleman wanes, sticking one’s neck out will only bring harm.
Hexagram 26: *Da Chu* (Mountain over Heaven, *Great Accumulation*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Qian* (Heaven)
☀ Yang Aspect: Heaven within the mountain signifies great accumulation and storage. It is a time for profound preparation before a breakthrough — amass knowledge, wealth, and connections abundantly. Settle down to improve yourself; when your reserves are sufficient, you will naturally be able to take on great responsibilities.
☾ Yin Aspect: Accumulating without putting it to use leaves one with a belly full of learning but no place to apply it. Learning without acting is in vain; having talent but not displaying it leads to being buried, wasting one’s abilities on trivial tasks and idling away time.
Hexagram 27: *Yi* (Mountain over Thunder, *Nourishing*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Zhen* (Thunder)
☀ Yang Aspect: Solid outside and empty inside like an open mouth, this is the way of nourishment. Be cautious in speech and moderate in diet, tending to both physical and mental nourishment. Support yourself through your own efforts, value self-cultivation, and harmony of body and mind will bring lasting well-being.
☾ Yin Aspect: Illness enters through the mouth, and disaster exits from it. Indulging in food and drink harms the body; being loose-tongued invites misfortune. Not seeking to earn your own keep and relying on others will leave you with no ability to stand on your own.
Hexagram 41: *Sun* (Mountain over Lake, *Decrease*)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Dui* (Lake)
☀ Yang Aspect: Decreasing the lower to benefit the upper means voluntarily letting go of unnecessary consumption. Concentrate resources on key priorities, give first to gain later, and treat decrease as benefit. Sacrificing one’s own interests for others will ultimately bring good fortune; reducing desires brings freedom.
☾ Yin Aspect: Failing to exercise restraint and craving more will backfire. Benefiting oneself at the expense of others will eventually meet with retribution. Meaningless sacrifice is not the way of *Sun*; wasting resources in vain will make the losses outweigh the gains.
Hexagram 52: *Gen* (Mountain over Mountain, *Gen* as Mountain)
Hexagram Structure: Upper trigram *Gen* (Mountain), lower trigram *Gen* (Mountain)
☀ Yang Aspect: Two mountains stacked together signify *Gen* — stopping, knowing when to halt. Be as steady and firm as a mountain; stop when you should stop. Restrain desires, avoid greed and contention, and a calm mind brings clarity, resting in the highest good.
☾ Yin Aspect: Failing to act when you should act makes you miss good opportunities. Excessive conservatism leaves you stuck; stubbornness isolates you from the world. Stopping without flowing becomes stagnant water — stagnation.
